The Ultimate New Zealand Travel Guide eBook Ron Laughlin Reviews
Ron Laughlin knows New Zealand inside and out, and he shares his insights with others interested in this amazing country. Although Ron was not born in New Zealand, he has made it his home since 1989. Additionally, working in the tourist industry, he has had opportunities to receive feedback from hundreds of tourists. I recommend reading it cover-to-cover before arriving in New Zealand. That way, his observations and tips will give the conscientious tourist valuable insight into the land, its flora and fauna, and its intersecting cultures.
I found this book very useful. I downloaded it on my iPhone - I found this format so handy!! Excellent suggestions, clear directions.
This was a very useful book, with different tours mapped out depending on the amount of time you have, and there is plenty of information on different areas around NZ. I actually contacted the author, Ron Laughlin, and he was extremely helpful in customizing an itinerary for me. The one thing this book could use is some detailed maps.
I bought this book for a friend moving to New Zealand. The pages available online had a lot of information about the culture and interesting facts and experiences about New Zealand. When the book arrived (quickly and in great condition) it was very much geared to someone taking a road trip through New Zealand. Somehow I missed this in my initial looking at it. I still think it's a great book, but not as many pictures as I would have liked, and much of it is laid out in narrative format rather than quick reference. It would be the perfect book for someone going to New Zealand to do a road trip through a large part of the country. Not as good for someone just going to one location.
Not a slick professionally written travel guide, but an outstanding collection of personal experiences. I am planning a camper van holiday and this is invaluable
The book indicated that it was a suitable guide for all vacations in New Zealand. I don't agree! It is directly aimed at folks that want to use an RV to travel around New Zealand. However, it is totally unsuitable for any other type of vacation. There is little reference to suitable hotels, very few details of things to do in the major towns, as RV campsites appear to be the main topic.
There is also a great amount of repetition, word for word, from several chapters. So the book is very tedious due to reading the same information more than once.
Overall, I would not recommend it.
...in so many ways. This is one of the ugliest books I have ever bought; it is self published with an exceptionally poor choice of typefaces and layouts. A better layout and type design would have made this much smaller and heaps easier to read. So don't expect pretty. It is probably most useful for motorhome/campervan visitors--there is a fair bit of info, much of it useful, at the front on general aspects of such travel, most of it exceptionally opinionated (the author goes so far as to provide his email so you can ask for advice on rentals or even rent through him). The travel descriptions are arranged by routes (several rather odd) and it is frankly maddening to try and find a place you are wanting information on. A lot of opinions on specific places (restaurants, lodgings) that might be of use.
